<image:title>Blog - Let’s Talk Menopause…</image:title>
<image:caption>P.S. One last thing on this subject. I would highly recommend this book as a source of information. Lisa Mosconi did an amazing podcast with my favourite Dr Rangan Chatterjee https://drchatterjee.com/blog/category/podcast/ which was just fantastic and also well worth a listen to. This book talks loads about menopause and brain health, and strategies to deal with it.</image:caption>

<image:title>Ali - Alison Lyons - Founder</image:title>
<image:caption>As the founder of Studio36, Alison has dedicated her career to teaching movement. Since qualifying as a Physiotherapist over 30 years ago, her constantly evolving ambition is to guide clients to optimum function, health and wellbeing. The love of all things Pilates started in 1998, when working as a musculoskeletal physiotherapist, she spotted an advert to train with BODY CONTROL PILATES in London. Fascinated and totally undaunted by her limited knowledge of the subject (no-one had really heard of it!), she secured a place on the course. Totally inspired by their approach to teaching movement, she graduated as their first teacher in Northern Ireland in 1999. A number of years teaching in Holywood followed (where many of her current clients also started their Pilates journey), and Studio36 opened in 2006. It was the first fully equipped, specialised Pilates studio of its kind in Northern Ireland. Alison is qualified to teach on all the large Pilates equipment such as Reformer, Cadillac/ Trapeze, Ladder Barrel and Chair as well as smaller equipment and matwork up to Advanced level. BODY CONTROL PILATES is recognised as one of the leading Pilates schools in the world and Alison is their Regional Representative in Ireland and also a Senior Supervising teacher. This role has involved presenting at conferences and hosting regular Continuous Professional Development courses for qualified teachers, often with internationally renowned lecturers (who are consistently mesmerised by our fantastic space and view!) The spirit of Studio36 is a direct result of Alison’s love of meeting new people, creating connections and nurturing a community. Her teaching style is motivational, fun and educational, with a reputation for bringing out anatomy books and her beloved skeleton ‘Jeffrey’, always encouraging clients to expand their knowledge on a deeper level. She passionately believes in the ability to improve strength, balance and wellbeing, no matter what age or starting point. Outside Pilates her interests are numerous... and mostly healthy - walking, nutrition, mindfulness and books (but...she’s definitely known to have the odd G&T!).</image:caption>

<image:caption>Megan is a fully certified STOTT PILATES Instructor. Megan works with a wide range of clients with various needs and abilities from beginners to advanced. She enjoys helping clients develop body awareness, whether it be a daily task made easier or reaching an athletic goal. Megan commenced her training in Pilates over 15 years ago, and it became a vital part of her daily routine whilst a student at Central School of Ballet in London. Understanding how the body moves has played a key role in Megan’s training from a young age. She was an advanced level rhythmic gymnast and went on to become a professionally trained ballet dancer. At 8 years old Megan achieved a place on the Great Britain Rhythmic Gymnastics Team, requiring her to attend regular training camps at Lilleshall National Sports Centre of Excellence in England. She was part of the Team at the 2001 European Championships in Geneva, competing at an advanced level throughout her rhythmic gymnastics career. In 2005, she auditioned successfully and gained a place at Central School of Ballet in London to become a professionally trained ballet dancer. After undergoing surgery for a dance related injury Megan discovered the real benefits and potential of Pilates during her rehabilitation process. Pilates not only allowed her to recover fully from injury but also increased her all over strength and performance as a dancer. On returning to Northern Ireland, Megan graduated with a BSc(Hons) Sport Studies at the University of Ulster and commenced her Pilates Instructor training in 2014 with internationally recognised STOTT PILATES. She believes there is always more to learn and continues to regularly attend training courses to develop her skills and knowledge as an instructor.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Stephanie graduated as a Chartered Physiotherapist from UUJ in 1988 and quickly specialised in treating people with musculoskeletal problems. After a short sojourn in North Wales she returned home and has spent most of her working life in the out patient department of the Ulster Hospital.

Stephanie came to Pilates through her developing interest in current theories of muscle balance and how poor alignment is implicated in the development of chronic joint disorders. It is for this reason that she really liked the BODY CONTROL Method as it so carefully analyses good quality movement and makes it accessible for every body.

She has been teaching Pilates exercises for some years now but finally got around to converting her initial qualification to the BODY CONTROL standard in June 2013. This was a great decision as it has really opened her eyes to the full potential of Body Control to promote holistic well-being through movement.

She feels the best part of the job is seeing surprise on the face of someone with back pain when they get up from the mat feeling better!

Outside of work, Stephanie likes anything to do with the outdoors and has a peculiar obsession with orienteering - don't knock it ‘til you try it!</image:caption>

<image:title>Laura - Laura Glenn</image:title>
<image:caption>Laura is a fully qualified fitness and Pilates instructor who relocated to Belfast from Aberdeen, Scotland in 2017. She teaches group exercise, dance and Pilates at various Pilates Studios, gyms, leisure facilities and dance studios and has worked with local authorities and schools to deliver outreach workshops and projects in schools and with community groups. Laura became interested in Pilates about 14 years ago after being recommended sessions by her physio after sustaining a bad injury from marathon training. Already trained and working as a fitness and dance instructor, Laura was amazed by how much Pilates, more than anything else, improved her overall strength and running form. In 2013 she did an intensive one-to-one teacher training with Pilates trainer, Ellie Herman, at her studio in Brooklyn, NY and completed her Level 3 Matwork certification when she returned home to the UK. She has since done further specialisation courses with Body Control Pilates including her pre and post-natal qualification, which she has a particular interest in. Laura believes the principles you learn in Pilates lends itself to every other form of exercise you participate in and daily movement you make. The greater awareness you have of your body and posture means it becomes second nature in everything you do, helping to prevent injury and ensure good physical health. Laura lives with her husband, son, and golden retriever.</image:caption>

<image:caption>From rehabilitation clients, who need the support of the springs to enhance recovery, desk workers who sit too much, or even dancers and athletes, the Reformer is accessible to all. So what is it? A Reformer comprises a gliding carriage and a system of springs and ropes, which are adjusted to offer resistance or assistance to a movement. All the exercises can be progressed or regressed to suit the individual being taught. As a client you lie, sit, kneel or stand on the Reformer. The exercise repertoire is virtually limitless, the teacher will constantly vary the exercises in class, all with the aim of improving flexibility, strength, stamina and a more balance posture. Although if may appear daunting at first when compared with the simplicity (and stability!) of the mat, it is actually an excellent rehabilitation tool and you will experience an awakening of muscles you may never have felt before!</image:caption>
